what we do

We believe community service efforts can be accomplished in the limited time our busy schedules allow—and can make a big impact when accomplished in the spirit of fun!

We often work on service projects and fundraising efforts at our monthly general meetings.

Our Projects

The Orinda Junior Women’s Club supports a variety of projects that benefit the community, the arts, the environment, and children and families in Orinda and throughout the East Bay Area.

YouthInk Writing Contest

We are proud to have founded the annual YouthInk Writing Contest. The contest is open to all 6th, 7th, and 8th graders who attend an Orinda school or live in Orinda. It is a great way to support the literary arts among young people in the community. The program is run entirely by the Orinda Juniors, with additional financial support from local organizations and merchants.

STAND! for Families Free of Violence

The Orinda Juniors support STAND! by hosting an annual party for the children who live at the transitional housing facility. We provide entertainment (a magic show, puppet show, or visit from the Lawrence Hall of Science) and a pizza dinner, along with a set of helpful supplies for each family.

Habitot

Habitot is a children’s museum located in Berkeley that does a significant amount of community outreach.  We support them in their events, helping with projects ranging from creating birthday goodie bags to building a giant gingerbread house for the holidays.

Holiday Family Adoption

The holidays are a difficult time for many Bay Area families. Each year the Orinda Juniors support an organization (such as Bay Area Crisis Nursery or Brighter Beginnings) by adopting a family in need or by organizing a clothing or gift drive.

Children’s Hospital

Each spring, we assemble and deliver baskets to children staying at the Children’s Hospital Family House. The children, siblings of long-term patients at the Children’s Hospital, are always thrilled to have a special treat just for them. We also bake treats for their annual event in their Infectious Disease Ward.

Mastectomy Pillows

Each year we get together to cut fabric and sew pillows specially shaped to ease the discomfort of women with recent mastectomies.

Helping Hands

In times of need, our members can rely on each other for help with a hot family meal, driving kids to school, or any other small kindness that can make a hard moment a bit easier.

Local Outreach

We provide volunteer hours and resources to a variety of local community events: such as Orinda 4th of July activities, Orinda Action Day, Warm Winter Nights, and many more.
